Wake Up & Draw the Coffee!

The hidden agenda behind this exercise—not to take the fun out it—is to strengthen your conceptual thinking and editorial illustration skills. This prompt will help you look at an object or concept from many different angles—literally and figuratively.

Are you ready to caffeinate?

Overview

Coffee is our muse! Some of our best ideas show up while we’re enjoying our morning coffee (or maybe it’s tea for some of you). Over the years we’ve noticed so many ways to illustrate coffee. Here are ten ways to approach a coffee-themed illustration.

1) Draw your brew set-up and accoutrements

2) Illustrate all of your cups and mugs

3) Illustrate your favorite café

4) Be creative with the steam rising from your cup

5) Make a coffee/tea-themed pattern

6) Create a still life featuring coffee or tea

7) Illustrate the caffeine vibe and energy!

8) Draw a variety of pots and kettles.

9) Illustrate a story about your morning brew

10) Illustrate a coffee/tea recipe or map of coffee/tea shops and submit it to THEY DRAW!

What if...

Imagine you were hired to create an editorial illustration that would accompany an article titled "Coffee is my Muse." What would your illustration look like?
